Diesel Oxidisation Catalysts (DOC) or Purifiers, consist of a honeycombed substrate coated with a formulation of precious metals such as platinum, through which the hot exhaust gas is passed. This coating causes a catalytic reaction which helps oxidise the most hazardous exhaust gasses into safer compounds (Carbon Monoxide CO and Hydrocarbons HC are turned into Carbon Dioxide CO2 and water).
Fitting a catalytic converter will greatly reduce the toxic effects of the exhaust gasses, greater than 90% reduction in HC and CO can be achieved and a reduction in the associated health problems caused such as nausea, headaches, watering eyes etc, as well as a reduction in the diesel exhaust odour .
Catalysts need high exhaust temperatures to operate effectively (250 degrees C plus) and therefore need to be mounted as close to the engine as possible. They are simple, reliable, long lasting and virtually maintenance free.
A DOC should always be used if a machine is being used in a confined space.
